Jalal is an old, silver-blue Mesopotamian Blue tom cat with amber eyes.
- Jalal was highly intelligent, infinitely wise and unbelievably selfless. He was remembered like a god by his descendants which, he believed, were not cats since they did not fend for themselves and instead let humans spoil them. He was cold and callous enough to abandon his own legacy to beat an opponent in a fight. Nevertheless, his narcissism was overshadowed by his unrivaled intellect and powerful personal cunning.
- Jalal was a tremendously skillful martial artist, a ferocious opponent with an analytical sense of honor in his abilities. He was formidable enough to be remembered as one of the best combatants in his family history. Although, the Elder Paw and Varjak seem to be the only remaining descendants who respect his legacy correctly. He was, however, defeated and killed by Saliya of the North, this being the greatest battle he ever fought.
- In the books Jalal is seen as a wise, old cat, who is teaching Varjak the way of a real cat in his dreams. He is an ancestor of Varjak's family and has many tales told about himself and his adventures he had, when he was alive.
- Jalal first appears in the dreams of Varjak, when he has passed out after falling down the tree near the wall of the Contessa's House garden, and tested his skills.
